SUNDAY MORNING SERVICE

24th January 2020

Hebrews

7

We encourage you to spend some time in prayer and ask God to speak to you this morning through his word.

Consider & Pray

24 but because Jesus lives for ever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Heb7: 24-25

Meditate on the permanence of the work of Jesus.

Jesus does not save us in part but entirely.

As it goes on to say later...

27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.

Do we believe that?  Do we rejoice in the fact that through repentance of sin and belief in Jesus, all our sin is dealt with, permanently, completely, once and for all?

Our lives are a response to this great reality - not an attempt to make sacrifices again and again. Our lives should show the contagious joy and hope this good news has for sinners saved by grace through faith alone.

Bridges - there are lots of different types, some big and some small, some old and some very new. Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge is the longest bridge in the world and it is over 164 Km long.

How many bridges can you think of?  Which one is your favourite?

We use bridges to cross all sorts of terrain so we can get from A to B. Why am I talking so much about bridges?

Well I think Priests are a bit like bridges, and in the passage we are reading today it is all about a priest called Melchizedek. There are lots of Priests in the Bible but Melchizedek is the first we hear about. Priests bridged the gap between man and God, but the problem was it wasn’t for very long until the bridge would break because of peoples' sin.

When Jesus came, he became a bridge between man and God, but because he was perfect he was the strongest bridge ever, in fact Jesus is an unbreakable bridge, if you trust in him he will never break and he will carry you all the way to his Father in Heaven.

Activity

Could you build bridge?  Build a long one or a strong one, or a strong and long one! Use anything you like. As you do it, think about Jesus -  how great it is that he has done all the work in building the bridge that connects us to Him and His Father – Share your bridge on the family group chat or why not show them at coffee zoom-time!
