SUNDAY MORNING SERVICE

2nd May

Hebrews

12:1-3

We encourage you to spend some time in prayer and ask God to speak to you this morning through his word.

Consider & Pray

1 Corinthians 9:24b-27

...Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Going on a long trip...

Desert Sand

Song to Start

Read together

In Hebrews 11 we read that Abraham acted by faith, he went on a long trip and he had to leave things behind to go to the land he was promised. Read the story of Abraham together as a family and talk about how he acted by faith.

Activity 1

Play a variation of the classic "I'm going on a trip" game.

As a family play the "I'm going on a trip game".

The first person begins by saying, "I am going on a trip and I am taking (e.g. my dog)". The next then repeats the previous sentence and adds one more item of their choice e.g. "I am going on a trip and I am taking my dog and my beach ball" and so on.

But for this game you must say what they will be leaving behind. So, the sentence will now be, "I am going on a long trip, but I am not taking...or...etc."

In today's true story from the Bible they will learn about someone who was going on a long trip and had to leave a lot of things behind. They must listen careful so they can find out:

  • Who went on a long trip?

  • What did he have to leave behind?

  • What was he promised?

Activity 2 - Time to talk

After reading together the story of Abraham make a list of all the things God promised to give Abraham.

Talk about how difficult it would have been to believe in these promises if you were in Abraham's situation. Make a list of all the obstacles which would have stood in the way, try to link these to the promises.

How was it possible for these promises to come true?

Look at how Abraham responded in 12:4 and 12:8, what does is teach us about what Abraham believed about God? What does it mean to have faith?
